Signs to Help Detect If Your Home Needs Water Damage Restoration

When it comes to water infiltrating your home, minor problems can quickly turn into a detrimental issue. Leaving water sitting for too long without rectifying the issue will result in having to outsource a water damage restoration team in the hopes of restoring your home to its pre-damaged condition.

If you can identify the water damage quickly after it’s occurred, you may still have to contact a water damage restoration company but there will be a much higher chance that your home will be fine with minimal damage. It’s also beneficial to know what to look out for in the case of water damage so that you can complete a brief inspection prior to moving into a new property. That’s why today we are sharing the signs to look out for so you can easily detect water damage within your home.

General Ways of Spotting Water Damage in a Home

Water Stains

Different coloured marks that appear on the floor, walls, or ceiling for no apparent reason are most likely what we call water stains. They can appear as slight discolouration’s or as a white/rust colour, depending on the extent of the damage. Although these water stains are easy to spot, they can appear in more inconspicuous locations in your home such as the crevices between walls.

Generally, these marks are caused by an undetected leak in the plumbing which could be a telling sign that your home may need some water damage restoration. Finding leaks can be difficult, which is why you should call our professional water damage restoration team. They’ll be able to identify if the water is from a current or previous issue and get underway on solving where it is coming from.

Although mould is a common occurrence in damp rooms of your home such as the bathroom when it’s found anywhere outside this space it’s a telling sign that there’s moisture where there shouldn’t be. To thrive in your home mould only needs two things and that’s moisture and oxygen. Once it begins growing in your home it spreads like wildfire, so it’s best to put a stop to it by finding the water source as soon as you notice mould spots.

Mould is an extremely dangerous fungus that can have detrimental impacts on your health and home. Normal, small amounts of mould that can generally be found in bathrooms are fine to take care of yourself but as soon as it’s found anywhere outside the usual small spots in your bathroom, needs to be handled by water damage restoration experts.

Humidity and Dampness

There’s one thing the inside of your home should never be: damp. Finding damp areas of floors, ceilings or walls is another sign that you have a leak, and it needs to be found quickly to prevent any further damage. Having damp spots in your home can also cause it to feel humid, so if you notice increased humidity within your home have a feel around to see if you can notice any damp areas that could be the cause.

Soft Timber or Damage to Paint

Timber and paint are often the first materials that begin to show signs of water damage. Water can cause hardwood flooring to start looking warped or have air pockets begin to lift the boards. Peeling paint is another simple sign to look out for, like flooring the paint may even have water underneath the service forming small bubbles on walls or ceilings. These are important things to look out for as they’re easy to spot signs that your home may need water damage restoration.

Detecting Water Damage in Walls

Identifying water damage within walls is a difficult task as there are usually no obvious signs. In some cases, what appears to be just a dirty mark on your wall can be caused by a much more serious issue. Although it may be difficult there are a few things you can do to help identify water damage behind walls.

  1. Check Around Your Home for Musty Odours

A musty odour within your home generally isn’t too hard to find and will only stick around the areas that are causing it. It’s important to not let the smell linger because these kinds of odours can be due to large amounts of water being absorbed into the drywall, which shouldn’t be a normal occurrence in your home!

  • Mould Growth

Mould growth on random walls within your home is not normal. Signs of mould around areas that there is known plumbing fixes shouldn’t cause concern because there’s supposed to be dampness around the area. However, finding mould on walls where there are no known plumbing fixes is a red flag and should be investigated immediately by water damage restoration professionals.

  • Visible Indicators

If water damage is excessive, you may start noticing visible indicators. Some of these visible indicators were listed above and include:

  • Water stains (marks that are causing discoloration on your walls or floors)
  • Peeling paint or wallpaper
  • Walls looking warped
  • Cracking
  • Water pooling at the base of the wall

How To Prevent Water Damage This Storm Season

Summer weather is unpredictable, especially in Queensland. During summer you’ll frequently find that it can be a perfect day with clear blue skies one minute and then the next you’ll be facing a severe thunderstorm. The key to feeling safe when wild weather hits is being prepared and understanding how you can prevent water damage from occurring in your home.

There are numerous ways you can prepare your home for the upcoming storm season and prevent water damage from ever occurring in the first place. Keep reading to find out what water damage is and the simple things you can do to prevent your home from being severely impacted this summer.

What Is Water Damage?

Water damage is the damage that occurs to your home when it’s exposed to a sudden infiltration of unwanted water in places it shouldn’t be. Water damage can occur from various sources such as:

  • Leaks
  • Flooding
  • Burst Pipes
  • Storms
  • Blocked Gutters
  • Poor Drainage

Water damage can be caused by several different issues but no matter the cause it’s important to always have your property checked by a professional when you first notice signs of dampness. Many people attempt to deal with the water damage themselves but what they don’t know is that there are different types of water that are not only harmful to your home but to your family too.

When water damage occurs due to flooding, a leaking dishwasher, or a burst pipe in your bathroom this can be harmful water known as greywater or black water. Greywater is wastewater from domestic use such as from your washing machine or dishwasher. This water isn’t completely toxic but isn’t safe for consumption as there is plenty of bacteria in the water that can easily spread throughout your home affecting the health of your family.

Blackwater is the most dangerous type of water and can contain toxic contaminants such as chemicals and sewage, having detrimental effects on your property and the health of those living there. Whether you can identify the type of water or not, it’s always important to contact professional help immediately to contain the damage and ensure the safety of your family.

How Do Storms Cause Water Damage?

When a summer storm rolls in hard and fast it can cause water damage in various types of ways, depending on the type of storm and where your property is situated. The most common form of water damage caused by storms is due to heavy rain or hail. When hail or heavy rain occurs, it can weaken your roof, causing holes and therefore leading to water seeping into your home.

If your home is situated close to water, an unexpected large downpour can cause water to rise quickly which in turn can infiltrate your home, especially if a high tide coincides with the storm. Flooding is also common in low-lying areas of Queensland throughout the storm season so it’s important to understand what usually happens in your local suburb to see if that is something your home may be susceptible to.

So, What Can You Do to Prepare Your Home for Wild Weather?

Check That Windows and Doors Are Secure

Windows and doors are the gates to your home, so ensuring that they are nice and secure is the first step to preventing water damage. Inspecting your windows and doors for cracks can help you identify where issues may be and correct them before storm season. It’s also important to check if any areas are flimsy because during storms winds can pick up dramatically which flimsy areas may not be able to withhold and if they give out water will come straight into your home. To help water from creeping in underneath your door you can also purchase a weatherstrip which helps keep unwanted water out of your home.

Give Your Home a Good Clean Before Storm Season

Keeping your home tidy can decrease your chances of water damage occurring drastically.   The first thing to tidy up is your outside gutters. Checking that gutters are clear, and clearing them if they are not, helps water exit your property quickly and efficiently without any severe impacts. If drains are left with debris in there then this allows water to sit and build up, eventually overflowing and damaging your home. Cleaning up any green waste from your yard will also allow water to leave your property easily without causing any flooding.

Think Ahead

Thinking ahead is the simplest and the most cost-effective way to prevent water damage.  Completing a thorough inspection of your home will ensure you will know what needs more work when it comes to protecting your home. For example, it’s important to thoroughly check your roofing prior to storm season. Whether you complete it yourself or have a qualified professional check it out, it’s important to check that there aren’t any existing holes in the roof that water can seep through without your knowledge

High Pressure Cleaning For Your House

Your home is a very personal space that is an extension of you. This is a representation of who you are, to be seen by those around you. So how you clean the exterior is just as important as how you take care of the interior. In the end, you’ll want a home exterior that’s spotless and will get heads turning—that’s where house pressure cleaning in Brisbane comes in.

It’s easy to forget about looking after your home’s exterior when you spend so much of your time inside. However, this shouldn’t be an excuse as the outside of your home is actually the most vulnerable to different elements such as sun, rain, and temperature changes. All of these conditions can take a toll on your home and leave it looking lifeless or uncared for. And who wants a home that looks like that?

For situations like this, pressure washing can take care of the job and make it easy to improve the overall appearance of your household.

Here are some reasons why you should consider high pressure cleaning for your house:

House pressure cleaning brisbane

High pressure cleaning is easy and effective for your house

House pressure cleaning uses far less water than hose cleaning, and is effective in targeting areas that need attention. With a pressure cleaner, you can quickly remove dirt, dust, and built up grease that could be covering your home’s exterior.

Not only that, home pressure cleaners in Brisbane are also great for cleaning driveways, which often collects a lot of dirt from its surroundings.

By treating your home to a routine high pressure cleaning, you’ll be able to help give back its fresh appearance that’ll leave you feeling the same way as the first time you saw it.

It can also help with preparing a home for painting

Aside from its impeccable cleaning benefits, house pressure cleaning Brisbane is also great for preparing one’s home surface for painting. This is because a pressure cleaner can accurately clean a whole surface to ensure that the new paint you will put on will stick.

So before you start repainting your home, make sure that your walls and surfaces aren’t dirty as this can cause paint to easily crack and peel. Use a pressure cleaner to prepare the exterior of your home for painting. Giving special attention to dirt and dust that could hinder paint from setting perfectly, and proceed to give your home that fresh coat for a brand new look.

It is safe and chemical-free

With South QLD Restoration house pressure cleaning in Brisbane is now safe for the family and the surfaces of your home. However, do not attempt to do it yourself if you have not done proper research or have not had prior experience with such an equipment. If done incorrectly, the extremely high pressure water can cause serious harm to people or objects around it.

For example, if you are going to use a pressure cleaner at home, make sure to clear your surroundings. Avoid accidents and do not point it at people or fragile items.

Overall, the best way to go about it is to hire a professional to do the job for you instead. Professionals are experienced and will save you money, time, and effort.
